Summer

– Athletics: The focal point of much of the first term, athletics has occupied an important place in the life of South Peninsula since it first participated in the inter-schools competition in 1953, and then established the inter-house tradition in 1954. [For more, read here.]

For many ex-students, it is the inter-house competition which holds the most precious memories, and conversations between alumni and alumnae years down the line often include the question: “Which house were you in?” Mimosa have won the title on the most occasions, while Azalea are the current champions, having won in 2019 as well. For a reflection of the 2020 competition, read here.

As far as the inter-schools competition is concerned, SP has had a checquered history. In the late 60’s and early 70’s, a top 3 position was the norm but as time went on, and other schools grew in size and became ‘hungrier’ for success, we struggled to maintain those standards. Nonetheless, with schools divided into regions, each with their own sections, we eventually became firmly entrenched in the A-Section of the Southern Zone, but often found ourselves a distant second behind first Steenberg and then Mondale. In 2019, however, we found ourselves back where we belonged, winning the A-Section. (It must be noted, however, that a new competition had been instituted, the Super 8, comprising the winners and runners-up of the top sections in the various zones. This meant that Mondale and the combined Wynberg Boys and Girls teams were absent from the A-Section.) In 2020, SP placed third in the A-Section, behind the aforementioned two schools. Seven of our athletes were selected for Western Province, namely Roxy Davids (400m and 800m), Abduragmaan Karriem (100m and 200m), Leo Forbes (Long Jump), Benecio Naidu (Long Jump), Nabuweyah Karriem (100m), Logan Thomas (Long Jump) and Saeed Mohammed (Shot Put and Javelin).
