PREAMBLE
South Peninsula High School believes in offering its students as wide a range of subject choices as possible in order to provide a wide range of opportunities for study and subsequent employment. It is, however, not always possible to accommodate all the subjects in the course of the normal school day; therefore, certain subjects are taught after school as optional subjects for interested students.
The following stipulations apply in the case of eighth subjects:
1 CURRICULUM
The subjects are taught in accordance with the National Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) for the relevant subjects.
2 PASS REQUIREMENTS
Pass requirements are as set out in the Department of Basic Education’s ‘Guideline for the Implementation of Promotion and Progression Requirements for Grades 10 – 12: 2015’.
3 SBA REQUIREMENTS
In accordance with the provisions contained in the document mentioned in 2 above, and in conjunction with other relevant provisions, a student, in order to progress to the following grade, must have complied with the prescribed School Based Assessment (SBA) requirements for that academic year.
4 DEREGISTRATION FROM THE CLASS
4.1 Because of the nature of the eighth subject, the lessons do not necessarily take place on a daily basis, being conducted only once or twice a week. For this reason, it is imperative that the student attends classes regularly. If a student has failed to attend at least 80% of the classes prior to the start of examinations in any term without a valid reason, he or she will be deregistered from that class with immediate effect.
4.2 If, in the opinion of the teacher, a student exhibits disruptive behaviour on a regular basis, that student will not be allowed to register for the subject in the following year.
5 FEES
5.1 Given the fact that the eighth subject falls outside the normal time-table, there is a fee applicable, which is determined by the school on an annual basis, and which is paid directly to the teacher involved. The fee for 2021 is R1500.
5.2 The fees are payable over the first three terms, i.e. R500,00 per term. Each payment is due by the end of the first week of the term. Failure to pay will lead to deregistration from the class.
5.3 If a student’s school fees are not up to date, he or she will not be allowed to register for an eighth subject.
NB: 1. Since all of the subjects offered as eighth subjects at South Peninsula are taught on the same day, students can choose to do only one extra subject.
2. It must be understood that eighth subjects are extra subjects, over and above the seven which take place during the course of a normal school day. In other words, a student is not allowed to deregister from any one of the seven subjects in favour of doing the eighth subject.
